Select some text and click the "Text to path" button on the top toolbar.

The text is converted to a group of drawing objects, like any other in the program.

If you ungroup with the "ungroup all" button on the top toolbar,  you can modify the individual shapes.

Don't confuse this with fitting text to a path where the text is broken up into separate letters that are still text objects.
